April 2010
STATEWIDE MEETING
"It's All About Relationships!"
On April 16, Thrive hosted the first-ever meeting for more than 80 leaders from the Thrive Demonstration Communities and the state's early learning coalitions - including coalitions supported by Thrive as well as coalitions supported by the Foundation for Early Learning.
The theme of the meeting was strengthening relationships so that we can better support families and children. Discussions centered around strengthening internal systems, strategic networking, and the potential role for early learning coalitions under the new statewide early learning plan.
EARLY LEARNING COALITIONS
Literacy and Learning - Fun for the Whole Family!
This year, Thrive is working with the 10 early learning coalitions it supports to implement a statewide project that focuses on early literacy and family literacy. Through the "Share a Story!" project, friends throughout the early learning community will invite families to create a special Family Story Book. This project, which runs through Father's Day, will not only underscore the importance of early literacy but also family literacy as well. Goals for this project include:
- educating families about the importance of early literacy and family literacy
- introducing ways to enrich a story-sharing experience
- discussion about the importance of developing literacy skills from infancy through kindergarten
- raising awareness about the importance of family literacy and early literacy throughout the community.
Thrive worked closely with Humanities Washington, the state coordinator of Motheread, to develop this project.
