Learning for Life

Gifts that Last a Lifetime

(Series originally aired December 2009)

This is the time of year when most people get into the giving spirit by giving a gift to a friend or family member or by lending local support to a favorite charity. It is also the perfect time of year to think about the gifts you can give a young child. These gifts don't cost a dime or require batteries-just a bit of time.

This month's Learning for Life will broadcast next week beginning on Monday, December 14. Each day will focus on a different gift you can give a young child-special learning lessons that will last a lifetime!

Your Time, Love and Patience: Children begin learning the moment they are born. Your facial expression, your touch, your voice, everything you do or say, helps your child learn.

12.15.09

Your Words Help Children Grow and Learn: It's so basic, we take it for granted - the eye contact, the touch, and the sound of a parent's loving voice. Verbal communication is one of our most powerful tools as parents.

12.16.09

Limit TV Time, Spend Time with A Book: Ask almost any parent whose young ones spend time before a TV screen. When the TV is on, communication is out. Research shows toddlers who watch TV can fall behind in their language skills.

12.17.09

Play Time with Mom or Dad - the Best Fun for Your Child: You don't have to stand in long lines to get your child a favorite new toy. You likely already hold that honor. You don't need expensive toys for family fun - just turn simple household chores and items into family entertainment. Finding that perfect playground, a place for a child to learn and laugh, is a treat for parents and kids alike.

12.18.09

Teaching Your Child Empathy Towards Others: Linda Filley-Bentler from the Roots of Empathy program explains how teaching your children how to feel compassion will help their emotional development.
